Revolución Democrática Crisis: Leadership Challenges and Potential Presidential Candidate Emerges

The crisis in Revolución Democrática challenges the leadership of Senator Juan Ignacio Latorre, who has been questioned by party militants for poor handling of the crisis caused by the Democracia Viva case. Meanwhile, representative Jorge Brito emerges as a possible candidate for the presidency of the community, when the date of internal elections is still unknown. From the DR they affirm that, once the crisis is over, the deadlines will be established to carry out the internal elections and, unlike previous occasions, the heavyweights of the store, Giorgio Jackson and Miguel Crispi, seem to have no direct link with the militancy, in a spirit of not being dragged by the harsh crisis of the party.

“My focus and my energy are to face this serious crisis that the party is facing, in which some people have dragged the party into a loss of confidence, public damage and irregular practices that might even constitute crimes. Therefore, our focus as a national board is placed there, at the service of the party”. This is how Senator Juan Ignacio Latorre reaffirmed his permanence in the presidency of the Democratic Revolution (DR), following rumors regarding his departure due to his criticized handling of the crisis caused by Democracia Viva.

Inside the party they confirm that they are waiting for the crisis to pass to set a date for the elections and point out that the deputy Jorge Brito is the most probable candidate to assume the head of the community in the next period. They also maintain that the heavyweights of the DR, the minister Giorgio Jackson and the head of the advisers of the Second Floor, Miguel Crispi, have not been involved in the internal relations of the community for a long time and their leadership is diluted in the militancy.

“Catalina Pérez does not have to take responsibility, even if it is her close circle,” Latorre said on June 20 to The counter in the program “Al pan pan”, hosted by Mirna Schindler, regarding the relationship of the deputy with the Democracia Viva case. Eight days passed and, with new background information, the senator removed the apartment that he had given to the parliamentarian: “It is very unlikely that he did not know, it is his own region, it is his close circle and it will be necessary to verify whether or not he had interference in the signing of the agreement, maybe yes, maybe not, we don’t know that, “said the RD helmsman.

The first version did not generate good opinions within the party and, with the change in position, its ability to manage the crisis was questioned. Even, Latorre was also the focus of questions from Deputy Pérez herself, who, until now, has suspended her militancy. Last weekend, the deputy published a video on her networks in which she argued that, in a show of “lack of political talent and leadership,” Latorre “has been erratic, changeable, and, furthermore, has not told the truth.” .

The senator preferred not to respond directly to Pérez and affirmed that “we are speaking more by facts than by words or statements.” Despite this, the current president of the RD has not managed to maintain a stable position at the head of the store. Given this fragility at the top of the party, parliamentarians have probed options to succeed Latorre. Although there is still no clarity regarding the date of the voting to elect the new board, nor regarding who will compete, various sources in the community point out that the first name that appears is the deputy Jorge Brito.

After deeper background information regarding the Democracia Viva foundation was known, on Monday, June 26, the DR deputies met in an extraordinary way to address the issue. There, Brito declared that “all the people involved must respond like any ordinary citizen. I insist, that includes her (Catalina Pérez) as well. In addition, he emphasized that President Boric’s call was that “here there is no room to waver. No cronyism can make us relativize what happened,” Brito stressed. An offensive that until then Latorre had not given.

Today, parliamentarians from the Democratic Revolution assure that Brito does have support within the ranks, however, they revealed that – until now – he has ruled out the option. They also warn that his candidacy would not ensure a broad consensus within the party either, since he would not represent the style of the oldest militants.

The vanished heavyweights

In the election that left deputy Catalina Pérez in the DR presidency in 2019, the two biggest weights within the party competed competitively. On the one hand, the group supported by the current Minister of Social Development, Giorgio Jackson, and on the other, that of the current chief of advisers of the Second Floor, Miguel Crispi.

Various sources within the community assure that, following assuming their positions in the Executive, the two heavyweights of the party now do not have much articulation with respect to their militants. The power relationship they had with the DR seems to be blurred at this point.

After the crisis caused by the Democracia Viva case, they have not appeared to lead the inmate of Revolución Democrática either. Their relationship – they detail – is more frequent with the bench of deputies, but not in relation to internal partisan dynamics. Sources maintain that neither of them has been involved in it for some time now. They even reveal that minister Jackson, before coming to the Government, received criticism from militants because he did not become part of the party’s debates.

Inside the store they explain that the leadership of the militancy has become incompatible with the agendas of the Executive Power. It is the same phenomenon that the DR mayors referred to when they were offered to lead the party. As stated Thirdthe different communal chiefs would have conveyed that municipal work is incompatible with the leadership of the community.

It should be remembered that those who gave the first offensive once morest deputy Pérez, before Brito and Latorre, were the DR mayors Macarena Ripamonti, Tomás Vodanovic and Emilia Ríos. Even the communal chief of Viña del Mar told The Mercury from Valparaíso: “To build trust, you have to get to work forcefully and that means taking visible actions and not just speeches.” In addition, regarding the situation of Deputy Pérez, she maintained that “what has to happen is that all the people involved are thoroughly investigated and punished.”
