New Hope: Bacterium Link to Endometriosis Treatment Revealed in Japanese Study

Perhaps a hope of treatment for women with endometriosis. A Japanese study published a few days ago shows that endometriosis might be linked to a bacterium.

“They tried a very broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment that is very commonly used in gynecology in mice with endometriosis and they saw that the lesions regressed”explains Georges Quist, retired gynecologist, specialist in endometriosis.

However, several difficulties remain. “For now, the treatment is only experimental on mice. It has not been tested on humans. The second thing is what protocol should be applied? At what dose should the drug be given? Won’t there be resistance in humans”asks the gynecologist.

A hope

Antibiotic treatment would reduce the size of the lesions caused by the disease.

For the patients, the study represents real hope. “This treatment would be much less burdensome than what we are currently undergoing with surgeries or strong and heavy drugs to wear for the rest of the body”believes Ingrid Symphor, member of the Innerwheel Club of Lamentin, who has suffered from endometriosis for 25 years.

A clinical trial on women with endometriosis is currently underway. The results are eagerly awaited.
