Mike Trout Sidelined with Fractured Hamate Bone: Updates and Recovery Timeline

Mike Trout, who left Monday’s game in the eighth inning following fouling backwards while facing Padres right-hander Nick Martinez, was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday by the Angels with a fractured of the hamate bone of the left hand.

Trout is expected to miss six to eight weeks, which means he will be out of action until at least mid-August and possibly into September.

Trout said several players who suffered a similar fracture have contacted him for advice and he’s heard it can take as little as four weeks to come back, but he acknowledged it often takes longer. He is still receiving a second opinion to decide if he will need surgery, but it is considered likely.

“I knew it wasn’t good,” Trout said. “It is something strange. A lot of guys who had the surgery or the injury called me. Some returned in four weeks. Others took longer. We’ll see how it goes.”

In corresponding moves, outfielder Jo Adell and Mexican right-hander Gerardo Reyes were brought up from Triple-A Salt Lake. Cuban right-hander Víctor Mederos was optioned to Double-A Rocket City.

Trout, who was selected to the All-Star Game for the 11th time and started for the 10th straight year on Thursday, had been heating up at the plate.

The 31-year-old is hitting .333/.438/.648 in his last 15 games, with four home runs, three doubles and seven RBIs. He has hit .263/.369/.493 with 18 home runs, 14 doubles and 44 RBIs in 81 games this season. His .862 OPS is well below his career OPS (.994), but Trout worked to fix his mechanics in mid-June and they had been looking more like his old self.

Trout said the training staff told him there was nothing he might have done to prevent the injury. It was just an unfortunate injury that occurred with a swing.

“Looking back, I wasn’t in pain or anything like that,” Trout said. “I just felt something really painful and strange. Talking to other guys, it’s basically the same thing that happened to them. It’s frustrating because my body has felt great. I had a routine and I was stuck to it and this weird thing happens to me. But at least it’s nothing serious and the season hasn’t finished”.
