Preventing Future Flood Disasters: Expert Advice and Lessons Learned from ULiège

2023-07-04 17:25:00

No one has forgotten the floods of July 2021: two years later, ULiège experts gave their advice, their lessons to be learned to prevent this kind of disaster from happening once more.

Several researchers have been working on it for a year: a modeling of the rivers and all the surroundings likely to be affected in the event of rising waters. “We have identified 56 priority attention areas“, testifies moreover Jacques Tellier, professor of urban planning at ULiège.

Some urgent work has already been done, but in many cases it will be to make way for the river and destroy buildings if necessary. Indeed, the hydraulic laws that govern the flow of a river are much more complex than it seems. “We can find a measure which is favorable for a given flow and which becomes unfavorable for a larger start.“, explains Michel Pirotton, professor of hydraulics.

Dozens of projects will be launched and the total budget is huge: 453 million euros.
