The Washington Post reported that the Washington Fire Department has determined that a white powder found inside the White House late Sunday, which led to the temporary closure of part of the presidential compound, is cocaine.
The US Secret Service confirmed to Archyde.com that an “unidentified substance” had sealed off part of the White House, but referred other questions to the fire department, which declined to comment.
“Sunday evening, the White House complex was closed precautionally while Secret Service agents were examining an unknown substance found within a work area,” a Secret Service spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
The spokesman added that the material was found in the West Wing of the White House. The West Wing includes the executive headquarters in which US President Joe Biden lives, the Oval Office, a conference room and press conference area, as well as offices and workspaces for advisers and presidential staff.
Biden was not in the White House when the substance was found. Hundreds work in or pass through the West Wing regularly.
“The D.C. Fire Department was contacted for an evaluation and quickly determined the substance to be non-hazardous,” the Secret Service said. The spokesperson said an “investigation has been conducted into the cause and manner” of the substance’s entry into the White House.
Two officials familiar with the matter confirmed to The Washington Post that the substance found in the White House was cocaine.
