In the future, Italy will take tough measures once morest drivers who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Other penalties are also increased.

Rome – Many Germans go to Italy on vacation. It is important to know the applicable traffic rules so that your holiday is not spoiled by a ticket or, worse still, the suspension of your driver’s license. This will become even more important in the future, because the Italian Council of Ministers has now passed a legislative decree that significantly tightens some penalties. In some cases, you might lose your driver’s license for up to 30 years. New rules also apply to e-scooters.

According to the tightened traffic rules in Italy, repeat offenders face severe penalties

The new legislation primarily targets drivers who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The Italian news magazine the Republic writes in its coverage of the draft law from a zero tolerance limit. If the drug or alcohol test is positive, your driver’s license will be confiscated and you will be banned from driving for up to three years. Mind you for first time offenders.

Anyone who gets caught repeatedly will be allowed to test their breath alcohol every time they get behind the wheel. In this case, the law provides for the installation of an alcohol ignition lock in the perpetrator’s car. If the breath alcohol is not at 0.0 per mil, the car will not even start. The devices are already being used in other countries, for example in the USA and Sweden. Anyone who is caught drunk behind the wheel once more faces a driver’s license suspension of up to 30 years.

If you are caught driving under the influence of drugs and driving without a license as a minor, you can say goodbye to taking the driving test at 18. You can only get a driver’s license at the age of 24.

According to the new traffic regulations, e-scooters may only be ridden with a helmet in the future

Other rules will also apply to e-scooters in the future, such as the portal stol.it reported. On the one hand, the draft law provides for a general obligation to wear helmets. In addition, the scooters must have a number plate and be insured. If not, there is the Republic according to a fine of 100 to 400 euros.

It is even more expensive for e-scooter drivers whose vehicle is on the road without indicators or brakes on the front and rear wheels. Up to 800 euros are due here.

The law provides for far more than a pure fine when using the phone while driving. If you get caught with your smartphone behind the wheel, you have to hand in your driver’s license and are banned from driving for between seven and 15 days. The same applies to running a red light, speeding and not wearing a seat belt, among other things.

Parliament will decide on the draft law in autumn

The aim of the new regulations is to increase the safety of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists, left the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport opposite the Republic announce. Transport Minister Matteo Salvini hopes that Parliament will vote on the law in the fall and give it the green light. (sp)
