In Cuba, during 2022, the Border Guard Troops and their collaborators seized 3,512.33 kg of drugs as a result of 729 “recall events.”
These data were confirmed by the Ministry of Justice (MINJUS) in statements to the national television press.
Alexis Batista Cegrera, director of International Relations of MINJUS, confirmed that the increase in drug trafficking exceeds the figures of the previous year. Likewise, Colonel William Pérez González, vice chief of the General Customs of the Republic also confirmed the above information.
On the other hand, the José Martí international airport in Havana appears as the main detection point for drug trafficking. They are followed in that order by the airports of Matanzas, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba. We are talking regarding that between these four border points they add up to 77% of the detected cases.
What types of drugs have been detected?
Colonel William Pérez expressed in this regard that cocaine predominates among the drugs used. However, marijuana, synthetic cannabinoid and synthetic drug in general have also been found with some cases of ecstasy.
It is striking that the latter (ecstasy) had not previously been detected at the border.
The Deputy Chief of Customs pointed out that of the people used as drug couriers, 74% are Cubans who have been linked to this activity.
Meanwhile, the examples that can be mentioned regarding the current behavior of drug trafficking are dissimilar. Among them is the risk assumed by people who transport luggage and goods that do not belong to them.
The most common cases are those that move merchandise from North American agencies or other people in general. They are known as “encomiendas” and can constitute disguised forms of drug smuggling.
Here it is necessary to clarify that people are responsible for the merchandise they bring with them. Therefore, if they are detected by the authorities, they will have to demonstrate before the Court that this drug is not theirs.
