The media office of the Minister of Justice in the Lebanese caretaker government, Henri Khoury, said, on Tuesday, that the French judiciary agreed to transfer frozen assets belonging to the Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, Riad Salameh, and his aides to the Lebanese state.
And the office added: “The Minister of Justice announced the approval of the French judiciary for the requests submitted by the French lawyers … assigned by the Lebanese state to cancel the seizure of funds and property belonging to the Governor of the Banque du Liban, Riad Salameh, and his companions, Raja Salameh, Marianne Howayek, and Anna Kozakova, in favor of the Lebanese state.”
Salama, who is 72 years old and has held the position for three decades, is subject to investigations and arrest warrants in France and Germany, regarding allegations of corruption and money laundering.
A judicial source in Paris said that the Court of Appeal upheld, on Tuesday, the confiscation of assets worth millions of euros linked to Salameh and some of his aides.
“The court upheld all confiscation orders,” the source added. However, the source did not comment on whether those assets were transferred to the Lebanese state.
In 2022, Eurojust announced the freezing of Lebanese assets amounting to regarding 120 million euros ($127.78 million) in France, Germany, Luxembourg, Monaco and Belgium.
Although the organization has not named any suspects, prosecutors in the German city of Munich have confirmed to Archyde.com that Salameh is a suspect in the case that led to the assets freeze.
