Reducing Tobacco Harm: Experts Confirm the Benefits of Electronic Products

International experts specializing in the principle of harm reduction and the risks of tobacco, have confirmed that electronic tobacco products significantly reduce the spread of traditional cigarettes, which have high damages that result from the process of burning tobacco. They called for the need to allow the circulation of these modern products to counter the danger of traditional cigarettes.

In Washington, DC, the 7th Annual E-Cigarette Summit was held, where the latest scientific research on e-cigarettes was discussed. The aim of this summit was to seek to reduce deaths and diseases related to smoking.

Dr. Brian King, Director of the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), stressed during the opening session that e-cigarettes as a generic product are less harmful than traditional cigarettes that rely on combustion of tobacco. He also indicated that there are misconceptions linking nicotine to many harms, although he was not responsible for it. He stressed the need to correct those misconceptions through continuous work.

Professor Kenneth Warner, professor and emeritus dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan, USA, said that e-cigarettes were the subject of criticism at the beginning of their appearance, as it was feared that they might increase the rates of traditional smoking. However, the truth is that smoking rates among young people decreased at an unprecedented pace when the phenomenon of electronic smoking spread among them.

Professor David Levy, Professor of Medical Oncology at Lombardle Comprehensive Cancer Center, Georgetown University, described the reduction in traditional smoking by e-cigarettes as “incredible.”

According to research data, it has been shown that there has been a reduction of approximately 65% in traditional smoking in the age groups from 25 to 44 years, as a result of the use of alternative products. Despite the increased use of cigarettes that rely on heating, this has a positive effect on public health. For the 55-64 age group, a slight decrease is observed among males, however, e-cigarette use is slightly lower. While in the age groups over 65 years old, the use of e-cigarettes is clearly very low.

David Levy called for the necessity of preserving public health achievements through a sharp decline in the use of traditional cigarettes in recent years, as well as working to support the elderly in the face of traditional smoking.

Professor Peter Hajek, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the Tobacco Dependence Research Unit at the Wolfson Institute of Public Health, Queen Mary University of London, confirmed that studies have shown that removing restrictions on electronic tobacco products is one of the most appropriate measures to reduce rates of traditional smoking, and that allowing this Products reduces damage to public health. He added that banning these products gives traditional combustion tobacco products a competitive advantage and makes them easier to obtain, which poses a great risk and threatens very unpredictable and costly consequences.
