The president of the General Council of Dentists, doctor Óscar Castro, met this Tuesday, July 4, in Madrid, with his counterpart in the Spanish Society of Oral Medicine (SEMO), doctor Andrés Blanco, from whom he received his support “to promote activities that improve the oral health of the population”.

At this meeting, in which Dr. Rosa María López-Pintor was also present, who, in the same way as Andrés Blanco, was recently elected to her position in the aforementioned national scientific society, in this case as a member, its highest representative exposed “the need to organize more training courses for dentists on Oral Medicine”.

In Blanco’s opinion, this requirement is “basically” due to two reasons, the first of which is to “insist on the importance of early diagnosis of oral cancer and the relationship between oral pathologies and other systemic diseases.” “And, on the other hand, to focus on the well-being of the patient himself,” he said.

“It is not treating a mouth, but a person with a pharmacology and a pathology that we must take into account,” declared the president of SEMO, who analyzed, along with Óscar Castro, “the importance of regular visits to the dentist” . “Many diseases show their first symptoms in the mouth, and it is the professional who detects them,” he explained.

increase reviews

In this sense, Blanco stated that “if these reviews were increased, many cases of oral cancer might be diagnosed early and, in this way, improve the prognosis of the disease.” “Carrying out routine examinations of the oral mucosa; eliminating carcinogenic habits, such as tobacco and alcohol; and treating potentially malignant pathologies of the mouth, would improve the numbers of those affected and deceased by this type of cancer,” he stressed.

“As physicians that we are, our mission is to work together and implement actions that improve the quality of life of citizens,” declared, for his part, the maximum exponent of the General Council of Dentistswho considers that this meeting had a “very positive” result for both institutions.
