“If the legislation evolves favorably and reduces the number of blank days, too many children, including the youngest are still left to their own devices during this period and the parents are forced to organize themselves as best they can to keep their children at home when the school does not organize reception”, observes the association.

What do the children do during the white days?

In primary school, for 10% of pupils, no reception is organized for at least part of the white days: schools are purely and simply closed to pupils. A situation which is in breach of the legislation which requires schools to organize a reception and students to be present at school.

For 73% of primary pupils, no activity is offered for at least part of the white days. School is open but children have to keep busy in the playground. In 64% of cases, activities were organized during at least part of the white days. For 44% of the children, it was an excursion, sometimes paid for.

Extended white days in schools: “Some students actually have two extra weeks off”

“It is positive that the pupils can decompress and enjoy moments of relaxation at the end of the year, but it is also important not to leave the children on their own for long periods”, insists the association.

“A father told us that he found his little child crying because he had to stay all day in the yard, without any organized activity. Our survey shows that 73% of children are in this situation for at least part of the white days. We understand the difficulties of schools in offering quality care during this period, but these problems should not be passed on to parents who are sometimes forced to take time off to take care of their children at a time when school is supposed to be OBLIGATORY.”

In secondary school, pupils are even less supervised than in primary school. In 86% of cases, no reception is organized and in 89% of cases, the school does not organize any activity. In primary school, pupils can no longer be suspended for more than three days a year. During these days, students are required to attend school normally. In secondary school, lessons can be suspended for a maximum of 18 days in the lower level and 27 in the upper level. From the year 2026/2027, these days will be gradually reduced to 12 and 18.
