In the residual waste or maybe in the yellow bin or the yellow sack – where do you actually dispose of “Styrofoam”? It depends on. RUHR24 explains.

Dortmund – The long-awaited package from the trusted online mail-order company is just around the corner and has also been packed securely and carefully. Not a few customers should be heartbroken.

Residual waste or yellow bin: This is how polystyrene (“Styrofoam”) is disposed of correctly

But followingwards the unpleasant question often arises: In which bin do you actually dispose of the packaging waste and where does the “Styrofoam”* (the plastic is officially called expanded polystyrene) come from?

“So-called lightweight packaging is collected in the yellow bin or yellow bag,” explains the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) on its website.

Polystyrene belongs in the yellow bin or yellow sack as packaging waste

Specifically, this applies to packaging made of plastic, metal, composites and natural materials. In principle it is very simple (further service topics on RUHR24).

The following waste belongs in the yellow bin or yellow bag

“Plastic cups, sausage and cheese packaging, ice cream packaging, tin cans, aluminum foil, beverage cartons, plastic bags, plastic cosmetic packaging, styrofoam packaging“ (Those: BMUV).

Polystyrene waste in the household: choose a yellow bag or yellow bin

The disposal and recycling company Remondis writes: “Styrofoam waste that accumulates in the household belongs in the yellow bag, in the yellow bin or at the recycling center.”

But where does the plastic go if it is not packaging waste but, for example, as insulating material on the construction site or as commercial waste? In this case, the plastic must not end up in the yellow bin.

As commercial waste, polystyrene belongs in the residual waste

Remondis says: “Styrofoam often also accumulates as commercial waste, because it has very good insulating properties and is often used to insulate house facades. Since insulation materials in particular have to meet certain fire protection requirements for construction, they are sometimes mixed with flame retardants such as HBCD.”

Therefore, the following applies: “Styrofoam that accumulates during the renovation, i.e. that has been used as insulating material, therefore belongs in the residual waste. This also applies to styrofoam with adhesions of other materials.”

*Note: Styropor is a protected brand name of the company BASF: “Styropor, an expandable polystyrene (EPS), was invented by BASF in 1951 and is today the classic raw material in the construction and packaging industry. Styrofoam offers a wide range of products with a wide range of applications. Whether for safe, cost-effective insulation of buildings or shockproof and moisture-resistant product packaging.” (Source: BASF)
