Around 100 tons of pink shrimp will be exported by Cuba this year. The capture of the delicious shellfish occurred in the province of Ciego de Ávila in the first semester of 2023. After five seasons without meeting the forecasts, now the fishing plans have materialized. The director of Fishing Operations of the Ciego de Ávila Industrial Fishing Company (EPIVILA) commented on the subject to the local newspaper Invasor. José Osmundo López Calderón said that “the profits from these international sales will be used to repair and supply the fishing fleet itself. This means being able to fish and produce more for consumers.”

The executive insisted that “the shrimp catch is also our mainstay to get through the rest of the year. It will be six months in which the availability of the CL (Liquidity Capacity) that comes from shrimp fishing favors the acquisition of food. The beneficiaries will be our labor groups, including those who spend a long time fishing other species offshore”.

Repairs on the way, cash in hand

Pink shrimp exports from July will also allow repairing and supplying the company’s 64 boats. “They go on a journey for 20 days and we can do a good part of the food expenses with what the shrimp contributes. To a lesser extent it happens thanks to aquaculture productions”, highlighted the expert.

The same provincial publication pointed out that the profits from the shrimp catch will translate into foreign currency funds that Cuba acquires through exports.

Meanwhile, three months ago it emerged that the Cienfuegos Industrial Fishing Company (EPICIEN) also exceeded the capture plans for shrimp, crab and lobster. In all cases the objective is identical: to export these products.

The general director of EPICIEN, Idania Piñeiro Morejón, confirmed that the commercial activity of seafood generated a profit of more than 30 million pesos. The economic benefits improved the wages of workers.
