ST LOUIS — Jordan Montgomery beat the Yankees for the second time since he was traded last summer, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-1 victory over Gerrit Cole and New York on Sunday.
The Yankees completed a road trip with a disappointing 3-3 record.
On a day when Yankees manager Aaron Boone was ejected for the fifth time this season, Montgomery (6-7) allowed one unearned run, two hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings. He held New York hitless until Gleyber Torres hit a two-out double in the sixth.
Montgomery made his Yankees debut in 2017 and was traded to St. Louis on Aug. 2 for center fielder Harrison Bader. Four days later, Montgomery defeated the Yankees, allowing two hits in five scoreless innings.
Giovanny Gallegos relieved in the seventh and struck out pinch-hitter Billy McKinney to strand a runner. Gallegos walked Oswaldo Cabrera leading off the eighth, but retired the next three batters.
For the Yankees, Venezuelans Gleyber Torres 4-1 and Oswaldo Cabrera 2-1.
