The structure of a Harris County home is leaving thousands of social media users scratching their heads. Julie Borgman recently posted a photo of an elevated, two-story house in Nassau Bay—located regarding 27 miles southeast of downtown Houston—on a Facebook group of nearly 700,000 members called “That’s It, I’m Architecture Shaming.” On the page, architecture enthusiasts take turns poking fun at or praising buildings they find ugly or interesting.

The massive brick house on stilts appears to have two garage doors—with no way for cars to access them from the driveway. “The garage doors confuse me… In Nassau Bay, TX,” Borgmann captioned the photo. Since Borgman shared the image on May 19, the post has gone viral, garnering 13,000 likes, over 900 shares, and thousands of comments from people who were just as confused.

“That’s where the boat is. When it floods they can just mob out,” joked one user regarding the garage. “If you would’ve seen the spider that caused that decision, you wouldn’t be laughing,” commented another. “It looks like it’s getting up to walk away like a Baba Yaga house,” one person wrote.

“Is this when a McMansion grows its legs and finds a new suburb to sprout in?” questioned another. “When you’ve lived in flood zones, you know exactly what’s going on here,” another person commented. Clearly, not everyone in the comments lives in the south.

A home in Nassau Bay has caught the attention of social media users for its elevated garage doors.

As noted by a former resident of the neighborhood, the house was likely raised as a result of Hurricane Harvey. Due to their proximity to Clear Lake, several residents’ homes in the neighborhood flooded during the devastating Category 4 hurricane in 2017. Many of the homes were raised multiple feet above their original elevation to bring them out of the floodplain.

“Hurricane Harvey flooded this neighborhood to knee~waist levels,” commented Braeden Parnell. “This house to be on ground level I’m pretty sure, many of the houses in that neighborhood upgraded and some newly built ones started off on stilts.”

Per a 2021 report from Mike Snyder of the Houston Chroniclethe Nassau Bay home was raised 16 feet into the air over its previous elevation by Architecture Development Inc., which specializes in elevating houses built on slab foundations. At the time of the report, the house was reportedly was the highest raised home in Harris County.
