France events: Nael’s family says it did not call for violence and vandalism
1 hour ago
The family of Nael, the French-Algerian boy who was shot dead by police, told the BBC that they did not believe that the violence France had witnessed in recent days would bring justice.
A police officer shot Nael when he refused to stop at a checkpoint in the suburb of Nanterre, west of the capital, Paris, last Tuesday.
A relative of Nael, who declined to be named, told Katya Adler, the BBC’s European affairs editor, that the family “never preached hatred or rioting”.
Anaïs, a friend of the family, added: “Being a black or Arab young man in the popular neighborhoods of France means being exposed to racism, violence and racial discrimination on a daily basis.”
