As announced in the DH and in La Libre, Catherine Fonck and politics, it’s over. At least for the 2024 elections where she will not run once more.

A punch action for the current leader of the Engagés group in the Chamber and municipal councilor in Frameries. “A punchy action, but well thought out”, she rectifies in front of Martin Buxant on LN24 this Monday morning. “It’s very healthy in politics not to cling to mandates. We need a renewal with new ideas. I believe that there should be a limitation of mandates and it is important to apply this to oneself and not to lecture others.

Catherine Fonck admits that she no longer finds herself in today’s political world. “Particularly with the paralysis with which we have to deal,” she continues. “I also struggle with the constant conflict. Especially between those who must collaborate in governments. There is also the egocentrism, simplism and extremism that some show. It is an important lucid observation to try to have better tomorrows at the political level. In fact, I gave myself fully to my mandate. And then, at the end of the week, I asked myself the question: what have I been useful for?’ Too often, I realized that things might have progressed more, and faster.”

Catherine Fonck will stop politics: “I need to find meaning in what I do”

The politician denounces a world where the sense of priorities is a problem. “We prefer to block one or the other to prevent him from having an extra feather in his hat. Politicians think less and less of common sense. Communication has also become different. Today, we prefer to make TikTok videos rather than moving forward on files. I would like politics to refocus on more substance, less communication and paralysis.”

The one who was elected federal deputy for the first time in 2003 ensures that she is not tired or frustrated. “I just refuse to participate in a system that I can no longer accept. If the worst exceeds the best, there is a real concern”, she adds. During this interview, she admits that the Covid period played an important role because she believes that there is a deep gap between reality and the things promised by politicians. This has created a huge problem of trust between the population and their professional world. One question remains unanswered: what will be its future? “I have no job waiting for me in the warm. But I want to go back to medicine, my first love.”

Catherine Fonck: “I’m not fighting once morest Horeca, I’m fighting once morest tobacco”

After discussing her personal case, this Monday’s guest returned to an important issue: the waiting times for MRIs. Today, it is sometimes necessary to wait months before obtaining an appointment for this type of request. “We lack machines,” she explains. “France has twice as many and Germany three times. This can be explained in several ways. Already, there are nine Ministers of Health. It’s far too much and it contributes to the slowness in changing things. Then the machines are very expensive. Finally, we lack technologists. Quite rightly, we talk a lot regarding the nursing world which is experiencing a shortage in Belgium. This also concerns technologists, who are much less talked regarding when it is a profession of the future.”

Catherine Fonck denounces “the new economic policy” of the Inami: “Frank Vandenbroucke prefers accounting logic to the health of patients”

Another important fight: smoking. This Monday morning, we learned that smoking rooms would be banned from 2026. “Remember: this is the leading cause of cancer in Belgium. I don’t want to attack the Horeca world, I’m attacking tobacco. Let’s denormalize tobacco and provide tobacco-free spaces. I want a common objective with the Horeca. Let’s dare to tackle the subject together to take a step forward and take up the challenge.”

Anti-smoking law: in the Horeca, smoking rooms will be banned in 2026!

This idea of banning smokers outside, the Horeca is really not in favor of it. “Remember, when smoking was banned inside establishments. There was also resistance. Today, the workers thank the politicians for having taken this decision. This might also exist with this new measure but we must find solutions together.”
