Each month, in partnership with Circana, Europe 1 looks back on food inflation, through its sample basket, which includes 12 everyday products from major brands or private labels such as rice, eggs or even washing powder. Objective: to follow the rise in prices. What to remember in June is the increase in pasta.
It’s the first Monday in July and therefore the time to reveal the Europe 1 basket for the month of June in partnership with the panelist Circana. The price of our selection of 12 food and hygiene products increased once more last month, almost one euro more, to 58 euros and 43 cents. In June, it was notably the one-kilo packet of national-brand spaghetti that recorded a significant increase. However, the price of wheat has fallen in recent months.
The package of pasta is the symbol of the showdown between manufacturers and distributors. The price of pasta has increased by more than 30% over one year. This increase is logical because the price of wheat has soared due to drought in Canada, one of the world’s largest producers. Except that in recent months, the price has been falling and yet, in June, the price of a one-kilo package of national brand spaghetti in our Europe 1 basket increased by 6.2%.
The other price components did not fall
“In the composition of the price of the packet of pasta that you buy, there are many other elements integrated. There is energy, which remains on high price levels”, explains Emily Mayer, director of studies for the panelist Circa. “There are the processing costs in the factories, the wages which have increased. Not everything has gone down.”
Panzani, for example, has announced a drop of a few cents in the price of its pasta packets in the coming days. But, according to the brand, next fall’s harvests will determine whether these declines can be confirmed.
