Artificial intelligence like ChatGPT makes it easier for cybercriminals to develop malware. AI also helps malicious parties to make phishing emails more credible, for example. The National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV) warns once morest this.
Artificial intelligence can write texts, generate photos and videos and even imitate someone’s voice. As a result, it is increasingly difficult to determine the authenticity of texts, images, audio and videos, warns the NCTV in the annual cybersecuritybeeld.
“We see that cybercriminals are working smarter and smarter,” says Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg, the National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism. “It is therefore important that we increase our resilience, because security is and will remain linked to national security.”
In addition, the NCTV sees that various countries use cyber attacks to achieve their geopolitical goals. According to the NCTV, cybercrime is an attractive revenue model and causes a great deal of damage to people and organizations affected by it.
According to Aalbersberg, our country, every sector and every organization are more connected than ever. A cyber attack on an organization or sector can therefore have consequences for many people.
‘Can increase our resilience’
“We cannot always prevent cyber incidents,” says Aalbersberg. “However, we can increase our resilience, reduce the consequences and limit the damage.”
In addition to cyber criminals and hackers who operate on behalf of countries, the NCTV also sees an increase in cyber attacks by so-called hacktivists. Organizations become the target of an attack for symbolic reasons. For example, because the country in which they operate supports Ukraine.
Socially disruptive cyber incidents have not yet occurred in the Netherlands or other EU countries. But according to the NCTV, that is no guarantee for the future.
