According to ayurverda, a traditional Indian natural medicine, we must adapt our way of life to each season. In summer it is the pitta dosha (fire + water) that must be kept in balance. We will choose a diet and activities according to the times of the day so as not to overheat body and mind. Remember also that our physiological needs are not the same in summer as in winter.
It is advisable to get up early, drink lukewarm water with lemon juice, meditate or go for a walk, because it is before 10 a.m. that it is best to exercise your physical activity for the day due to outside heat.
Do not hesitate to prioritize an aquatic activity that refreshes, stimulates blood and lymphatic circulation. Water is your summer ally for draining and also hydrating yourself. It is recommended to avoid eating too much salt and to reduce alcohol and other stimulants, without creating too much frustration (because it is also your vacation), we limit this annoying tendency to cool off with ice cream and frozen drinks, because they come to reduce Agni, the digestive fire.
We prefer light food (cooked seasonal vegetables, cereals), bitter and astringent flavors. Do not hesitate to decorate your dishes with refreshing herbs and spices (ex: mint, coriander, fennel, cardamom, cumin, etc.). This diet will help prevent heat stroke and dehydration.
Get into the habit of resting following lunch, staying in the shade, taking a nap or reading a book. At the end of the day, get some fresh air, go cycling, walking, swimming.
Avoid eating dinner too late in the evening so as not to disturb your sleep and opt for a digestive walk or a meditative moment following dinner to calm the mind, soothe the body and prepare you for sleep.
Avoid overly physical activities that tend to overheat the body and interfere with sleep. Far from it the advice to deprive yourself of dancing this summer!
It is advisable to drink 1.5 – 2 liters of water per day. Here are 2 examples of refreshing drinks: coconut water and cold hibiscus infusion.
Flavored waters:
– Watermelon + rosemary: cubes of watermelon + rosemary + 1 liter of cold water. Leave to infuse in the fridge overnight
– Strawberry + lime + basil: 4-5 strawberries cut into quarters + 1 lime cut into slices + 2 sprigs of basil + 1 liter of cold water. Leave to infuse in the refrigerator overnight.
Hydrating drinks:
– Coconut water to deeply hydrate the body in the morning
– Cold hibiscus infusion (thirst-quenching, draining and digestive plant)
The evening :
Coconut oil massage (refreshing oil): make circles in the abdomen to stimulate the digestive sphere and upward movements in the legs to drain and promote circulation.
