The Italians arrived in 1912 to Qussair City to extract phosphate ore following the establishment of the Egyptian-Italian company for the production of phosphate, funded by the International Bank of Rome at the time, where hundreds of Italians arrived, and following that they established the city to reside in it.

The Italians, following seeking the help of Egyptian workers who arrived in Qusayr from all governorates of Egypt, especially Upper Egypt, extracted phosphate from several different mines, and used the cable car and train to transport it from the heart of the mountain near the port of Qusayr, which witnessed the sailing of the first ship loaded with phosphate from the Middle East to India.

Wasfi Tamir, a historian interested in the history and heritage of the city of Qusayr, said that the first ship was called Kafi and sailed from the ancient sea port of Qusayr in 1916, with the first shipment of phosphate to be transported outside Egypt to the state of India.

He added to “The Seventh Day” that the time period in which the Italians arrived in the city of Qusayr was an era of work and production, as the company included thousands of workers, technicians and others within the company’s various sites, which were working in 8 mines and phosphates were extracted from them.
