Since the start of the year, new car registrations have jumped 15.26%. An encouraging performance to put into perspective following a rather disappointing 2022.
After the very complicated episode of Covid and the resulting shortages of semiconductors in 2022, the French automotive market is regaining some color. According to the Automotive Platform (PFA), which brings together national manufacturers and equipment suppliers, 190,848 new vehicles were registered in June. This represents a significant increase of 11.55% over one year.
And if we include light commercial vehicles of less than 5.1 tons, that makes 233,547 light vehicles registered last month, an increase of 12.49% over one year.

Since the start of 2023, with 889,777 new car registrations, the sector has grown by 15.26% in raw data. Results that should be put into perspective, note many experts, with regard to the year 2022, which had been disappointing, even worrying, with an 8% drop in registrations.
Progress of the electric
As for manufacturers, the Franco-Italian-American Stellantis remained the leading group in June in terms of volume with 27.4% of passenger cars put on the road. But the group suffered a decline of 2.8% year-on-year. The Peugeot brand, in particular, lost 10.5%.
For its part, Renault accounted for 25.8% of sales volumes last month, a decline of 8.7%. Third on the podium, the German group Volkswagen, which accounted for 12.3% of total registrations in June, an increase of 23.9% over one year.
Among all these figures, the report presented on Saturday by the Automotive Platform also shows the progress of electric cars and plug-in hybrids, twelve years before the planned end of sales of thermal cars in Europe. These cars reached 27% market share for the first time in June. A small revolution.
