Thailand recorded 48 new cases of monkeypox in June 2023, 2.3 times more than in May.

Most of the patients are men, 22 of whom are also infected with HIV, according to Dr. Tares Krassanairawiwong, director general of the department of disease control.

Since the first case of monkeypox discovered in Thailand in July last year, 91 more cases have been recorded and the infection rate is steadily rising.

Of the 48 confirmed cases in June, 38 are in Bangkok, 3 in Samut Prakan, 2 in Chon Buri and Nonthaburi and 1 in Samut Sakhon, Phuket and Pathum Thani.

Dr. Tares said the 48 patients all had same-sex relationships.

He added that none of the patients are in serious condition or have died.

He recommended having safer sex and avoiding sex with strangers.

Symptoms appear within 21 days of close contact with an infected person, including blisters on the genitals, mouth, and other parts of the body.

Other symptoms include headaches and muscle aches.

Dr. Tares said that if a person develops such symptoms, they should seek medical attention immediately.
