Meta Quest Plus – A shy offer of VR games by subscription

While Meta Quest 3 is expected in the fall, Meta is launching what looks like a tender offer. Thus, from this month of July, the Meta Quest Plus (or Meta Quest+) service offers a selection of virtual reality games by subscription, twice a month. If the formula seems to be a good initiative, it remains however not very exciting.

For this month of July, the shooter Pistol Whip and the arcade-inspired game Pixel Ripped 1995 will open the dance. Then, the peaceful Walkregarding Mini Golf and the more restless MOTHERGUNSHIP: FORGE will take over in August. On Meta’s blog, the statement of intent regarding the editorial line is as follows:

“It will combine the biggest hit games, hidden gems and classics from our catalog. It’s the most affordable way to expand your library. »

Two titles per month, however, there is not enough to make the crowds dream. Moreover, as with a Playstation Plus subscription, it will be necessary to remain a subscriber to keep the games downloaded in this way. In short, for a price of 9 euros per month or 70 euros per year, each month you can acquire at a reduced price two games that you do not choose and to which you lose access if you don’t want to pay anymore Meta Quest Plus. Here’s something to put the good deal into perspective…

This timid introduction is undoubtedly symptomatic of the lack of qualitative content in terms of virtual reality. While we have the feeling that Sony’s PSVR2 is struggling to take off due to the thinness of its catalog, the observation is not very different on the side of Meta (nor, for that matter, that of HTC or PICO, other competitors in this market). If the American company seems to want to take a step ahead of its competitors, it is far from being able to boast of being in a strong position.

The problem of virtual reality for the general public seems to be, once more and once more, a snake biting its tail: without content, little household equipment, and without household equipment, little investment and revenue prospects to encourage content creation. We feel that with the formula of Meta Quest Plusit’s a step in the right direction, but probably very insufficient to revolutionize the market.

Last detail, and not least: the service does not seem to be, for the moment, accessible from France. Without more information on this subject, it remains to be seen whether this is just a delay in setting up the service, or whether it will be necessary to wait several months before the formula is deployed with us.
