MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Liverpool added another piece to their midfield on Sunday with the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai from Leipzig.

The Hungarian international has cost 60 million pounds ($76 million) following Liverpool activated his release clause. Szoboszlai has agreed to sign a five-year contract with the English Premier League club.

“For me it was perfect to take the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is phenomenal,” Szoboszlai said.

Revamping the midfield was a top priority for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp following a disappointing season that saw them miss out on the Champions League for the first time in seven years and fail to win a single title.

Szoboszlai, 22, is following in the footsteps of Alexis Mac Allister, the Argentine world champion who left Brighton for some 35 million pounds ($43.6 million) last month.

Klopp needed to strengthen the lungs of the team following the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

In addition, Fabio Carvalho joined Leipzig on a season-long loan.

Liverpool had their sights on Jude Bellingham, but the Englishman signed for Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund for $110 million last month. He also revealed his interest in acquiring Mason Mount, who will join Manchester United from Chelsea.

The acquisitions of Szoboszlai and Mac Allister allow Klopp more depth in a sector that was fragile last season due to injuries that sidelined several key players.

Szoboszlai came to Leipzig from Salzburg in 2021. He made 92 appearances and scored 20 goals.

The midfielder, who can play as 8 or 10, had also been in the orbit of Newcastle, Liverpool’s rival in the Premier League.

Szoboszlai has made 32 caps for Hungary and took over the captaincy last year.
