Beat the Heat: The Growing Trend of Cool Roofing for Energy Efficiency

“Cool roofing”, which consists of painting roofs white to reduce heat, is a growing sector. With global warming, this roof cooling technique, already widely used in the United States, is developing more and more in Switzerland.

This fairly simple method involves painting a roof with a “thermal” white paint. This has a special composition, sometimes made of ceramic microbeads or oyster shell waste. These coatings make it possible to attenuate the heat of the sun on the envelope of a building and therefore inside it.

Effects outside and inside

In Geneva, the company Eco Peinture offers these services. This week the first coats of thermal paint were applied to a roof and the first results can already be seen.

“At sunset, on the bituminous roof, we were at 60 degrees with the laser thermometer and at just under 30 degrees with the first coat of paint, right next to it,” explains Robin Liengme, director of Eco Peinture.

And these cooling effects are felt inside too, but depend on the outside temperature. The difference is “4 to 6 degrees on average when you have an outside temperature of 25 to 30 degrees and 8 to 12 degrees felt inside when you have 30 to 40 degrees outside”, summarizes Robin Liengme.

An accessible technique

Such techniques therefore represent an asset for lowering the energy bill, but also the ecological impact, when using air conditioning systems.

These coatings can be laid on many surfaces of bituminous roofs, corrugated sheets of a shed and even tiles, because some manufacturers offer color thermal paints.

The sector is developing strongly and the products are more and more accessible. It is generally necessary to count a price per square meter which varies between 45 and 65 francs, also counting the preparation of the surface and the installation of the product.
