Assassinated Pasolini by Ernest Pignon-Ernest (France 3)
After the exhibition of four illustrious artists of the 20th century such as Picasso, Chagall, Nicolas de Staël or Miro, it is Ernest Pignon-Ernest, a living artist who is taking place this year at the Hôtel du Doyenné for his very first encounter with contemporary art. From his stencils on the walls of the Plateau d’Albion in 1966 recalling the danger of nuclear missiles, to his drawing of Rimbaud pasted on the walls of Paris in 1978 and his anti-apartheid collages in Nice, his birthplace, the works of artist reflect the art of our time.
This major artist is part of modernity by rising up once morest many of the injustices that strike our societies: apartheid, immigration or abortion. The places where he unveils his creations are never chosen by chance. “The idea is that the presence of the image comes to intensify the place, to disturb it, to reveal it“says the artist. In Brioude, Ernest Pignon-Ernest exhibits the life-size figure of Pier Paolo Pasolini that he immortalized in 2015 by mixing religious iconography with the profane world. This drawing, he stuck it on the scene where the filmmaker lived: in Naples, Rome and on the beach of Ostia where he died.

The works of Ernest Pignon-Ernest are ephemeral
Rimbaud on newsprint, the striking life-size figure of Pasolini who, like Michelangelo’s Pieta, holds his own tortured body in his arms, but also bodies, faces and gazes, of celebrities or anonymous people. The exhibition presents a majority of drawings and images in black and white on ordinary paper, a fragile material. Because the works of Ernest Pignon-Ernest are ephemeral. He has been sticking his images and posters around the world since the 1970s. The visual artist considers that his work can be visited in the street.
His installations are doomed to disappear. Far from the colorful paintings of Picasso exhibited last year in Brioude which is at the origin of his vocation “If I became a painter it is thanks to him, if I found this form of approach to reality, it is because I had the feeling that following him, everything was ridiculous” explains the plastic surgeon. Ernest Pignon-Ernest therefore chose drawing, poetry and the present.
The echo of the world is to be seen at the Hotel du Doyenné in Brioude until October 15.
