(Agence Ecofin) – The country is seeking to industrialize this sector of activity to boost its performance, in order to better satisfy local demand for fishery products while benefiting from the spin-offs for the Gabonese economy and employment.
There are 423 active aquaculturists and fish farmers in Gabon, according to the latest census carried out by the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Economy. A number that should increase with the various programs implemented by the State to promote this sector and increase local production and processing of fish products.
In January 2023, Gabon launched a training program for 2,000 young people in the processing of fishery products. There is also the government program “Cap sur l’autonomisation des jeunes” funded by the European Union, which offers, among other things, training in aquaculture and fish farming to Gabonese.
The objective is to industrialize the sector which only contributes around 1.5% to the national GDP according to official figures. ” Aquaculture and fish farming are one of the main responses to the strong demand for fish products on the Gabonese market.
