Dakar, Jul 2 (APS) – Five hundred and twelve leaders of local authorities said on Saturday in Dakar that they had signed a petition calling for the candidacy of Macky Sall in the presidential election of February 25, 2024.
”We […] we are ready to renew our confidence in you for the interest, happiness and glory of Senegal. This is why we are signing this petition to ask you to present yourself in 2024”, said Malick Ndiaye, the mayor of Gagnick, in the Kaolack region (center), reading the text in lieu of petition, in the presence of the Head of State, at the Palace of the Republic.
A “platform for consultation, reflection and action” will be created by the mayors and the presidents of the departmental councils who have signed the petition, according to Mr. Ndiaye.
Macky Sall’s candidacy is “an obligation for the peace and stability” of the country, according to the petitioners.
”We are convinced that a new mandate for Macky Sall is essential…” they add, affirming that the current head of state, in power since 2012, ”needs only five years to make irreversible the ’emergence’ of Senegal.
”These personalities come to ask you to be their candidate […] You are the leader we need,” said Mor Ngom, president of the elected chamber of the APR, Macky Sall’s political party.
According to a press release from the Association of Mayors of Senegal and its counterpart of the presidents of the departmental council, all or almost all of the militants of political parties of the Benno Bokk Yaakaar coalition, led by Macky Sall, the petition was signed by 87% of mayors of the country and 84% of the leaders of the departmental councils.
Without advancing a date, M. announced last week that he would say, following the Tabaski, if he would be a candidate or not.
By receiving them at the Palace of the Republic, he announced that he wanted to tell the Senegalese, next Monday, whether or not he will be a candidate in the presidential election of 2024.
The opposition suspects him of wanting to seek a new mandate, which, according to his adversaries, would be a violation of the Constitution.
He maintains that the fundamental law authorizes him to present his candidacy for the presidential election of 2024.
His first term of seven years should not be taken into account, according to him, because of the constitutional amendment by referendum of 2016.
But Macky Sall said in a book published in January 2019 by Editions Cherche Midi (France), ”Le Sénégal au cœur” (176 pages), that he had to exercise under the Constitution amended in 2016 his ”last mandate” if he were re-elected in 2019.
