At least six people died and nine were injured in the collapse of a building under construction on Friday in Abidjan, the Ivorian Ministry of Construction announced on Saturday.
“The provisional toll of this tragedy shows six dead and nine wounded, evacuated urgently to a health facility,” according to the ministry.
In February and March, 13 people were killed in the collapse of two buildings, including one under construction without authorization and the other built illegally.
Abidjan, in full demographic and economic growth, has experienced an explosion of construction in recent years, sometimes in an anarchic manner and without official authorizations.
“The phenomenon of building collapses persists due to the constant violation of building and town planning standards,” government spokesman Amadou Coulibaly acknowledged in March.
Several measures were then adopted to strengthen the surveillance of buildings, in particular the establishment of a “control brigade” and administrative sanctions once morest those responsible for allowing “unregulated” work to continue.
