After her ordeal, Vanilla was taken in to Save the Chimps Sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida. Prior to her arrival, she had never been outside of a one-foot-square cage or garage-sized enclosure. She lived in the famous laboratory (closed since 1997) until the age of 2, explains the New York Post. She was then part of a group of monkeys transferred to California, where she was confined to a somewhat larger enclosure, but the shelter went bankrupt in 2019.
Save the Chimps primatologist Dr. Andrew Halloran captured Vanilla’s first steps in the open air. Greeted by a huge hug from alpha male Dwight, Vanilla left her enclosure, looked up at the sky, and set out to explore nature and her new home.
