One of the dramas ofOverwatch 2and the first Overwatch long before, is to take place in an atypical universe explored in a very superficial way. Whether we think of the omnics, Sector Zero, Blackwatch, the Claw, Moira’s unethical projects or the story of Zenyatta, there is a story there waiting to be written to make justice to this world and its characters. Especially since this world and its themes lend themselves particularly well to interesting developments, between the relationship with subjugated robots who revolt, some of them becoming philosopher monks, transhumanism and the ethics of scientific research, or more dystopian questions regarding the power of certain societies and the future evolution of Humanity; there is plenty to do there.
Admittedly, all the maps in the game tell a story in their own way, and give us clues as to the big story itself, but it was never enough to the chagrin of fans of the franchise who always showed the want to explore this lore more. This was, moreover, one of the missions of the PvE mode originally planned for the second game, but the drastic reduction of Blizzard’s ambitions in this aspect cuts, fatally, the quantity of stories that will make their way until our game.
Omnics represent an interesting proposition within the general theme of AIs rising up once morest their creators.
It is therefore in this somewhat sinister and discouraging context that Blizzard has just announced a mini-series fully available on Youtube and named GENESIS. Although little is known regarding its chronological positioning vis-à-visOverwatch 2 and its PvE missions which will arrive in August, the trailer seems to place us at the time of the uprising of the omnics and present us their point of view but also that of those who fight them. We thus notice that Ana, Reaper and Reinhardt are in the video, as well as an omnic seeming to join the Shambali sect.
Here is the program described by the official account ofOverwatch :
First part: Dawn. Available July 6. Part two: Innocence. Available July 13. Third part: Rebirth. Available July 20.
Naturally this is just a mini-series with a handful of episodes that will last six minutes each, but it will be available for free to everyone (unlike the PvE missions), and, in itself, it is more than enough to please fans and finally push the lore forward following its slow stagnation over the years. And it’s not the annual scattering of a few comics and news of a few pages, far from being interesting let’s be honest, that will make us say the opposite. See you then, on July 6, on the Official Overwatch Youtube Channel to finally discover the lore of the games.
