Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas stands as the world’s largest cruise ship, being called by some the Titanic of the 21st century. After successfully carrying out her tests months ago, she is ready to sail the seas from 2024.

With its 20 decks, 365 meters in length and a weight of approximately 250,800 tons, this true icon of the oceans, as its name in Spanish says, offers its passengers a historical experience. It has seven pools, nine Jacuzzis, eight neighborhoods and six slides.

Inside, it houses 2,806 cabins and has a capacity for 5,610 vacationers in double occupancy. Adding the crew, this marine colossus can accommodate up to 7,600 people in total.

Tests and preparations

Construction of Icon of the Seas began in 2002 and it recently completed its sea trials on June 22. During these tests, the main engines, hull, brake systems, steering, noise and vibration levels were evaluated, according to a company statement.

The final exams of the boat will be carried out at the end of the year, with the participation of more than 2,000 specialists on board. Subsequently, the imposing cruise ship will begin operations in January 2024, offering seven-night voyages through the Eastern and Western Caribbean from Miami.

Tickets, which went on sale, sold out in less than two hours.

Unique experience on board

The ticket price for this boat is around $2,180 (almost ¢1.2 million), according to the Xataka media. Icon of the Seas is in Category 6, offering the largest water park on a ship, with six slides, seven pools and nine Jacuzzis.

In addition, the cruise has eight themed neighborhoods, including Chill Island, Surfside and Central Park, following the concept of “the best proposal for the family”, according to the company.

On the other hand, CNN reported that the ship will offer more than 40 dining options and a wide variety of entertainment, such as karaoke, an ice skating rink with daily shows, theaters, shops, cafeterias, soccer and basketball courts, among others. .

With 28 types of accommodation, Icon of the Seas becomes the first Royal Caribbean International ship to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fuel cell technology and clean energy.

Before Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise title was held by Wonder of the Seas, also owned by Royal Caribbean International.
