Llaryora, and her “new generation”; Schiaretti showed himself as the “first renovator”

The adjusted provincial victory, which still has to be confirmed by the Electoral Board, added to the defeat in several departments of the interior, generated anticipated debates within the Cordovan PJ, despite the conviction that they will continue in power.

In the PJ there is an ambivalent feeling. Relief for retaining provincial power, but also the certainty that a strong renewal will come, following 24 years in power.

Renewal. Governor Schiaretti assured that by not allowing re-election, the greatest renovation in history took place in Córdoba.

That feeling was fed by the latest definitions of Martín Llaryora, who will surely be made official next Wednesday as governor-elect by the provincial Electoral Board.

“We are a new generation that starts from scratch,” said Llaryora, in the early hours of last Monday, when he spoke to the Peronist militancy, which he asked not to celebrate the provisional result.

Llaryora also said that he is part of a generation that “has nothing to do” with the last 24 years of Peronist administrations, which José Manuel de la Sota and Juan Schiaretti shared.

When cross-examined that he was De la Sota’s Minister of Industry, Schiaretti’s lieutenant governor and mayor of Córdoba promoted by the current governor, the mayor of the capital clarifies that his reference is only for an “age issue.”

“Here, no one will be thrown out the window, but we are another generation that comes to power,” remarks the mayor of the capital.

The result in the Capital

However, as Llaryora also said last Friday at the launch of Daniel Passerini’s mayoral candidacy, the second period is yet to come: the municipal elections in the city of Córdoba.

The future and the scope of the renewal in the PJ, as well as the course of the alliance Hacemos Unidos por Córdoba, will also depend on the result in the Capital.

If the pro-government candidate promoted by Llaryora wins, the future governor will have more margin and power to impose what he calls “the Cordovan party”, a political space in which the PJ seems blurred, to the uneasiness of not a few Peronists.

If the radical Rodrigo de Loredo (Together for Change) stays with the Capital, the Cordoba political scenario will be different. A governor who will seek to build power, not so much from the PJ, and an opposition that following many years will have an inescapable political reference.

In any case, before celebrating the provincial triumph, leaders enrolled in the llaryorismo hurried to anticipate that a strong renewal in the ruling party is coming.

Without naming him, the llaryoristas try to contrast the vision of Llaryora with that of Schiaretti. However, in the same act last Friday, the provincial leader was shown as the “first renovator.”

“We have produced the largest renewal of leaders in the political history of Córdoba. This year there were 290 mayors who had already served more than two terms and, therefore, might not be reelected. And the same thing happened with 25 provincial legislators”, specified Schiaretti.

“In Córdoba, nobody is perpetuated in power. We have put the entire political leadership on an equal footing. And we have done it without falling into the temptation of repealing the law that prevented re-elections”, reaffirmed the governor.

There is no doubt that Schiaretti’s resistance to changing that law generated a healthy political renewal in Córdoba, not only in the PJ.

But many Peronists, who have been in the heat of power for years, resist this new reality. What produces –by low– an internal debate in the PJ.

For many Peronists, the drop in the vote harvest in the interior had to do with the fact that, of the 190 pro-government mayors who might not go for another term, between 40 and 50 lost in their localities.

Llaryora is convinced that the opening of the ruling party to other political spaces is the way forward in the future. A strategy shared by Governor Schiaretti.

This debate will remain frozen until the capital’s elections on July 23. The polls will mark the depth and course of a renewal that seems inexorable in the provincial ruling party.
