The dates might almost surprise, in this first year of the reform of the school calendar, but the alderwoman for Neighborhoods and Education, Julie Patte, explains: “July 5, 6 and 7 are the famous white days. There is no longer really any subject to teach but attendance at school remains compulsory. We therefore hope that the educational teams, from Jumet, but also from the other districts of the city, will seize the ball and come to take share in these new Free Quarters”.
Once once more, the Free Quarters operation is settling in the Bivort park, “one of the most beautiful, probably the most beautiful in Charleroi, neither too big nor too small, with a water point, remarkable trees and good-sized spaces for cultural events”, underlines the director of the cultural center L’Éden, Fabrice Laurent.
Both the director and the alderman remind us: the Free Quarters were born in 2021, in the difficult context of the health crisis, with the periods of confinement which kept places of culture, such as schools, closed for many months. “Since then, everything has returned to a kind of normality, admits Fabrice Laurent, but no longer organizing the Free Districts for all that would have meant not learning any lessons from the Covid and the pandemic”. Julie Patte, immersing herself in the context of the time, confirms: “The Cultural Center, the schoolchildren, the ATL service, free time reception, of the City, all were questioning and worrying regarding the confinements. Quartiers Libres brings, even following the pandemic, a bubble of oxygen in public service buildings or, as here, in a superb green setting in the heart of a densely populated district.
With the exception of the Center district, where the intra-ring never lacks public activities anyway (the big five of the Quartier d’été starts there on July 6), the Free Quarters still intend to stop in each district. This big five-day meeting, at the beginning of July, is settling in the North district. The first part of the 2023 edition of Les Quartiers Libres, during the spring holidays last May, stopped in the South district, in the city of Sarts, in Couillet; in the Eastern district, it was at the Cité Delvaux, in Montignies-sur-Sambre. The event unfortunately missed its meeting with the South district, in La Docherie, due to apocalyptic weather. “To something, misfortune is good, because the show canceled by this torrential rain in May has been rescheduled here, at Bivort park”, adds Fabrice Laurent.
The weather forecast looks good
“No one had previously checked the forecasts for July 5 to 9, the alderman in charge laughs, I did it and they are wonderful. Since this July meeting is spread over five days, with the first dates listed at the end of the school year, we are also counting on the effectiveness of word of mouth to ensure the arrival of the largest possible crowd”.
In five days, it’s obvious, there will be something for all tastes and all ages. Without embarking on a tedious exhaustiveness of the rich program of the event, we can highlight: a big boom “Yes we dance kids”, on Wednesday July 5, at 5 p.m.; a rock concert for the little ones and an open slam stage and a writing workshop, Thursday July 6, from 4 p.m.; the parade of creations from the textile workshops of the various citizen areas of Charleroi, Friday July 7, at 6:15 p.m.; the show Tu Sens La Terre Bouger by Cirque Barbette, on Saturday July 8, at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. or even the concert by Les Juliens, who twist and rock ‘n’ roll the repertoire of Julien Clerc.
Throughout these five days, the activities of which begin around 2 p.m., there will also be several continuous activities, such as initiations to the circus, giant games, old games, eco-responsible games, a bread-making workshop , ephemeral tattoos, a reading area and a guinguette, to rest, eat and recharge your batteries.
Fabrice Laurent talks regarding the sustainability of the Quartiers Libres: “This is the third time that the event has taken place at Parc Bivort and the local residents confirm that they are happy with this meeting which brings their pretty park to life. We We have also already been to the city of Montignies-sur-Sambre three times with Quartiers Libres and, there, the event has recreated such social ties that a new neighborhood committee is in the process of being set up there, following directly from Free Quarters”.
Last but not least, each of these Free Quarters days at Bivort Park is free to access and completely free.
