The “Goodbye Germany” emigrants Patrick and Severine Dewitz want to build a new life on Curacao. After arriving on the Caribbean island, however, the couple receives information that seriously shakes this plan.

Curacao – sun, beach and sea: The “Goodbye Germany” couple Patrick and Severine Dewitz imagined life on Curacao to be so beautiful. The Brandenburgers want to take off as a travel guide on the Caribbean island. But the topic of self-employment turns out to be more difficult than expected – the dream of emigration is on the brink.

“Goodbye Germany” fiasco: Patrick and Severine Dewitz do not have a work license

With “Goodbye Germany” viewers can regularly observe the difficulties that life abroad can entail: Just recently, the emigrant Toni had to put the opening of her hardware store on hold. In a new episode of the TV show, Patrick and Severine Dewitz are also accompanied at the start of their emigrant adventure. The couple first moved to the Caribbean island of Curacao without a work license and would like to take care of all the necessary documents on site. “It should be easier than in Germany. It should also be easier from a tax point of view,” says master painter Patrick optimistically in the VOX program.

At an appointment with a private immigration agency, however, the people of Brandenburg received bad news that shattered their dream of self-employment. “You have to be here for at least five years to be able to start your own business. Before that, you would need a Dutch citizen as a partner to set up the company for you,” an employee explains to the emigrant couple. The plan to work as a tour guide on Curacao is also a long way off for Patrick and Severine, because a tax rate of a whopping 37 percent is due on the Caribbean island.

Thanks to “Goodbye Germany” to the celebrity – it worked for these stars!

On August 15, 2006, the first “Goodbye Germany” episode flickered across television screens, since then VOX has produced over a dozen seasons of the docu-soap. Over the years, many emigrants have achieved considerable fame thanks to the show, including Konny (67) and Manuela Reimann (54), Daniela Katzenberger (36), Chris Töpperwien (48), Jens Büchner († 49) or Caro (44) and Andreas Robens (56).

Patrick and Severine’s Plan B: Can the “Goodbye Germany” couple stay on Curacao?

For half a year, the uncertain situation burdened the “Goodbye Germany” couple. Since life on Curacao is expensive, the savings are shrinking more and more – a fact that severely troubles Severine in particular. But Patrick doesn’t give up hope and quickly renovates two houses that are on the property of their apartment building. While the local owner provides the material, the master painter pays with his labour. In the end, the two want to share the income.

A plan that initially seems to be working: Severine and Patrick can not only become self-employed with the help of their landlord, but the bookings for the holiday home are also increasing. The coming months will show whether the emigrant couple will finally be able to turn their travel guide dream into reality. Danni Büchner is only too familiar with the ups and downs of emigration. In the meantime, however, she no longer has to worry regarding her finances: Danni Büchner now has an impressive monthly salary of up to 8,000 euros. Sources used: VOX
