The New York Islanders simultaneously announced that they had settled four cases on Saturday followingnoon, on the sidelines of the opening of the NHL autonomy market.
In the first case, they extended the contract of their star goaltender Ilya Sorokin for eight seasons, at an annual salary of $8.25 million.
This contract extension will begin at the start of the 2024-2025 calendar.
Sorokin, who turns 28 next August, was one of three finalists for the Vezina Trophy, awarded last week to Linus Ullmark of the Boston Bruins.
The former third-round pick has been a workhorse, appearing in 62 of the Isles’ 82 games.
Along with the move, the team also brought back fellow Russian and Sorokin’s reserve, veteran Semyon Varlamov, for four seasons at a salary of $2.75 million. The latter will be 39 when his association with the Isles ends.
On the New Yorkers’ skater side, Swedish center Pierre Engvall and defenseman Scott Mayfield each got new seven-year contracts from veteran general manager Lou Lamoriello.
Acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the last trade deadline, Engvall, 27, performed well in a short sample with the Long Island club, amassing nine points (5-4) in 18 games.
He will receive an annual salary of $3 million for the duration of the agreement.
Mayfield, a 30-year-old right-hander, spent his entire career with the Islanders, who selected him 34th overall at the 2011 auction. He will pocket $3.5 million annually until 2029-30.
He had his best offensive production in the NHL in 2022-2023, with a total of 24 points (6-18) in 82 games.
