The medical literature indicates that patients with type 2 diabetes have two main aspects to which they must pay attention, since the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, that is, the hormone that regulates the movement of sugar in your cells, and the cells they do not respond adequately to insulin and consume less sugar.
In Puerto Rico, diabetes is the second disease chronic disease that most affects the population, as indicated by Dr. Yussel García, an internist and medical director of the Hospital de La Concepción, in Puerto Rico, in an exclusive interview with Medicine and Public Health.
“Currently, there are more than half a million people with diabetes in Puerto Rico alone, and the greatest risk these patients are at is not found directly in diabetes but in the complications it brings, because if control is not done of this disease, cardiovascular, kidney and brain complications can occur”, indicated the doctor.
Dr. García assured that it is important to point out that some specialists during the disease treatment process do not see such a strict restriction of carbohydrates as necessary, but to balance the patient’s health, their consumption should be gradually reduced, to allow the liver recovers its functions.
It is essential that patients recognize the changes in their body, and in this way consult with their doctor to determine the appropriate treatment with the exact doses and adapt the complementary diet and exercise plan.
“The first thing to know is what is happening in the body, between what is blood sugar, insulin and another component called glucagon, which is the hormone responsible for raising the glucose level,” explained Dr. Garcia.
In conclusion, patients with type 2 diabetes require a diet that is low in calories and rich in fiber, which includes vegetables, as well as fruits, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. It is also convenient not to consume processed products, especially those rich in added sugars.
Specialists agree: Weight loss is directly related to improvement in insulin-dependent patients. With more and more research around the world showing that weight gain leads to an abnormal buildup of insulin resistance in the body, it is time for people to become proactive and lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
On the other hand, Ms. Coralis Alsina, in the space of the Medicine and Public Health Magazine, of Connect with your Specialist, offered a series of recommendations on food for diabetic patients in which the ketogenic diet stands out.
“These diets in the clinical setting are called ketogenic diets, because they are free or very low in carbohydrates, making fat the predominant thing on the plate, followed by protein and then carbohydrates, and, for the simple fact of being low in carbohydrates if they help the patient,” Alsina said.
However, he warned that attention should be paid to the consumption of these types of dishes in the long term because it is important to control other factors associated with diabetes such as cardiovascular problems.

“There is no diet as such that recommends an exact diet or a specific therapy, but it is good for control because it is low in carbohydrates and it must always be accompanied by adequate follow-up from the specialist,” he concluded.
