The 110th Tour de France was launched in Bilbao (ESP) with the victory of Brit Adam Yates (Team Emirates). The 30-year-old prevailed over his twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco-Alula) and is 1st leader A fall 22 km from the finish claimed two prominent victims.

The 110th Tour de France was really launched around 12 km before the finish line. On the 2 km long, toxic ascent to the Côte de Pike, the tour favorites flexed their muscles for the first time. Tadej Pogacar (SLO/Team Emirates) and last year’s winner Jonas Vingegaard (DEN/Jumbo-Visma) stretched the field with their start and caused a decisive break up to the culmination point.

However, two other riders fought for the day’s victory: in the descent from the Côte de Pike, the twin brothers Adam and Simon Yates pulled away and did things together over the last few kilometers. Although driving for different teams, the two of them, unsurprisingly, got along very well and didn’t let any other driver get close.

At the end of the first stage with start and finish in Bilbao, Adam Yates (Team Emirates) had the better legs following 182 km and distanced his brother (Jayco-Alula) by 8 seconds. Pogacar secured third place – and thus 4 bonus seconds. On Sunday Adam Yates will start the 2nd stage as the 1st leader.

Mas out following a fall – Carapaz loses 15 minutes

On the descent of the Côte de Vivero, 22 km from the finish, two prominent riders fell with devastating consequences. The Spaniard Enric Mas, leader of the Movistar team, was not able to continue the race and had to give up on the first stage.

The consequences for Richard Carapaz were not quite as serious. But the leader of the EF Education team was only able to get back on the bike following 5 minutes. By the time the reigning Olympic champion from Ecuador had even lost 15:24 minutes to the day’s winner. The dream of a possible podium finish in Paris is already over for him.

This is how it goes

On Sunday it’s hilly once more – once more in the Basque Country. The program includes 209 km from Vitoria-Gasteiz to San Sebastian. This section also takes the riders onto the route of the Classica San Sebastian. After two mountain prizes in the 3rd and 4th category, the Jaizkibel (2nd category) is passed shortly before the finish.
