This week dozens of people crowded in front of the Havana banks because seven of these establishments ran out of cash to pay their clients, either for salaries or any other extraction process. This situation is not unique to the capital, since several Cuban provinces have reported a similar problem.
As highlighted a note of Cuban newspaper, those affected demanded a convincing response from the bank authorities since it is indeed their salaries or retirements. A woman told the aforementioned media that more than ten days ago money was sent to her account and she has not been able to extract it due to lack of money at the ATMs in the capital.
“It is a country situation, ATMs do not have money for retirees. People who have savings accounts are going to the bank to get their money and the bank is not paying them. We have taken our receipt to seven different banks throughout Havana and it has not been possible to collect it,” the source explained.
HAVANA WITHOUT MONEY IN ATMs
Other interviewed Havanans assured that almost ten families were “causing a scandal” in a bank because they had not been able to collect much larger drafts, but also some very small ones.
“If they sent me the money in Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), I can’t pay for transportation, you can’t pay for the purchase of equipment, you can’t buy candy, you need the money physically,” explains a second person. “The MLC does not exist, that is a lie. The only thing left is to ask what time they estimate, because they are even signing up on paper to make a reservation,” added another.
The shortage of banknotes in the banks has caused long lines in financial institutions throughout Cuba since morning hours. The country’s government recently announced that it would limit the withdrawal of cash to private businesses and implemented the so-called “Extra Cash” service, which authorizes the client to request a limit of up to five thousand pesos in entities that handle cash, such as warehouses. or some agricultural sales positions.
