The crew of the German sea rescue ship “Humanity 1” has brought almost 200 migrants and refugees on board during several operations in the central Mediterranean. As the Berlin association SOS Humanity announced on Saturday, the ship met four boats in distress the evening before and during the night. The sometimes very weak and injured people, including women and small children, were rescued from their boats. The Italian authorities helped with the coordination.

Two people were evacuated by the Coast Guard. The “Humanity” had already had its first mission on Thursday.

The “Humanity 1” then made its way to its assigned port of Ortona with a total of 197 survivors on board. This location on the central Italian Adriatic coast is more than 1,000 kilometers away from the locations near the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa. But the “Humanity 1” was not allowed to enter there. Thousands of migrants had arrived in Lampedusa on boats in the past few days. The island’s reception center is overcrowded.
