A woman had to have part of her leg amputated following she got stuck in a moving hallway at the airport in Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday.
The 57-year-old Thai woman was heading for the gate of her flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat province when the incident occurred, ‘Global News’ reported.
Authorities believe the unidentified woman fell on the platform. The force of the fall would have lifted the moving corridor safety cover.
The victim’s left leg was then caught in the mechanism, according to the “Bangkok Post”. The airport medical team had to amputate his leg above the knee on the spot.
She was then referred to the local hospital for further care.
The medical team at the hospital quickly confirmed to the woman that she would not be able to reattach her leg, but she requested a transfer to a hospital where she would be able to do so.
In a statement posted on their Facebook page, Don Mueang Airport promised to cover the woman’s medical expenses, in addition to compensation.
The victim’s son said his family is “shocked” by the events, and that he is worried regarding his mother’s mental health.
“Even though she tries to show she’s strong through her facial expressions, we know she feels broken because of the sudden loss of her leg,” he explained.
The airport manager expressed his deepest condolences over the incident. He also pointed out that the moving lanes are checked every day, with an additional inspection every month. The hallway where the incident occurred is closed until further notice. A team of engineers will come to inspect the mechanism, as part of an investigation by airport management.
