FARMINGTON, New Mexico (AP) — An 18-year-old man carrying at least three weapons wandered through a northwestern New Mexico town shooting randomly at cars and houses before he was fatally shot. The shooting left three dead and six wounded, including two police officers, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. Monday in Farmington, a town of regarding 50,000 near where the borders of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado meet. It is a commuter and service city in an industrial oil and natural gas region.

Officers responding to calls of gunfire found the shooter within minutes and killed him with at least one shot, Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe said in video posted Monday night. The man used at least three weapons, including an “AR-style rifle,” he added.

The shooting was “honestly one of the scariest and most difficult days Farmington has ever had as a community,” he said.

The identities of the shooter and the victims were not initially published.

Investigators were still working to determine the motive for the attack and were speaking with the attacker’s family.

“But right now it seems to be purely random, that there were no schools, no churches, no people selected,” Hebbe said. “During the occurrence, the suspect wandered into the neighborhood for up to a quarter of a mile. There were shots once morest at least six houses and three cars (…) while the suspect randomly shot at everything that occurred to him to shoot.”

State Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a statement that she was praying for the families of the victims and that the event was “another reminder of how gun violence destroys lives in our state and our country every day.”

At Hills Church, a few miles from the site of the attack, dozens of people gathered for prayers late Monday. Some hugged each other as they listened. The mayor and security agents were in the crowd.

A Farmington police officer was shot and taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released, while another state trooper who was also shot and drove himself to the hospital remained in the hospital and had a good prognosis, Hebbe said. The agent was stable, he added.

Farmington police were scheduled to hold a press conference Tuesday followingnoon.
