The Open VLD wants at all costs to increase the employment rate in Belgium and is thinking to do this of activating housewives, writes the newspaper Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday.
“It’s a group that nobody ever talks regarding,” said Deputy Prime Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne. “And let’s call a spade a spade: these are often of immigrant origin. Why don’t they go to work? Partly for lack of training, partly because of discrimination, partly for cultural reasons”, judges the Minister of Justice.
The Flemish liberal wants the federal government to reduce unemployment benefits for cohabitants with dependents (formerly known as “head of household”). Currently, these mainly amount to 60% of the last salary, but the Flemish liberals would like to lower them to 55%. “We have to activate these people. There is a huge reservoir there, of some 50,000 people,” said Vincent Van Quickenborne. “If you want to be a housewife, fine, but at your expense”.
The Open VLD also intends to scrap for an extension of flexi-jobs to a series of other sectors such as education, pharmacy, driving schools, travel agents, childcare, taxis, hairdressers, etc.
