Opening TikTok and seeing hundreds of videos of girls and boys buying tons of clothes on Shein every week is commonplace. But what is behind the market leading fast fashion company?
For several years now, the main criticism has been that the low prices of its products are due to a business model that uses hazardous materials, slave labor (including children), and poor working conditions.
To clean up its image, Shein invited six American influencers to visit one of its factories in Guangzhou, China, and when they arrived at the location, they shared the amazing images.
“You might see a clean factory, very well lit, which had an ‘innovation center’ and a warehouse. All the workers were smiling and there were no children,” he reported. Third.
“One of the guests even assured that she spoke with a woman who worked in the fabric department and who told her that she was ‘very surprised by all the rumors that have spread in the United States,'” she added.

A secret with voices
However, British channel 4 made a documentary in 2022 where it infiltrated Shein’s factories and discovered that the employees worked 18 hours a day, that they had only one day off a month and that they made 500 garments per day, in exchange for a salary so deplorable that it was not even enough to buy the same clothes they made.
For this reason, The Washington Post said that the influencers who came to visit the factory appeared to be “reciting press releases” from the brand. “I’m not going to lie, I really expected it to look like in the movies, very dark and gloomy, but I was really surprised to see each piece handled with care,” said one of the influencers in a video.
“Child labor and fair wages are serious issues and were some of the questions you guys were curious regarding and wanted me to ask,” another wrote in the caption to her post.
“When we asked some of the workers and employees regarding these issues, everyone we met was happy with their pay and the idea of child labor seemed crazy to them.” he added.

Fan reviews and brand response
Criticism immediately began towards the influencers who evidently received money for the work of visiting the factory: “How do you call yourself an ‘activist’ while accepting brand / money deals from a corporation that is ruining people’s lives and the world? environment?”, they rebuked one.
Most of the content creators had to disable comments on their posts and even delete them. While from the brand they denied that they have been scheduled.
“Shein is committed to transparency and this trip reflects the way we listen to feedback, providing the opportunity to show a group of influential people how we work,” they stated.
“Their videos and comments on social media are authentic, and we respect and support each influencer’s perspective and voice on their experience,” they added.
