Hanoi (VNA) – Local hospitals have received 6,000 vials of intravenous plasma-derived immunoglobulin (IVIg) for the treatment of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) which were delivered to Vietnam last week, according to the Administration drugs from Vietnam.

As the number of HFMD infections increases, the health ministry has asked importers to import more drugs to meet hospital demands, the administration under the health ministry said.

She said that currently, the quantity of drugs for the treatment of HFMD has basically met the demand from hospitals.

IVIG is an effective adjuvant therapy used in severe cases of MMBP and helps reduce the rate of referral, as well as the rate of serious complications of the disease in children. However, Vietnam has yet to manufacture the drug domestically.

The production of the drug depends entirely on the supply of plasma through blood donation. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of people donating blood has decreased significantly, a factor that has caused a shortage of raw materials for the production of immunoglobulins on a global scale.

In this context, since the end of last December, the Ministry of Health has ordered medical structures and importers to order the drug to ensure the supply of IVIG. However, the complicated developments of HFMD and the higher number of severe cases this year have led to an increase in demand.

The Health Ministry has also provided professional guidance to medical institutions and strengthened preventive measures once morest the disease, minimizing fatalities.

According to the Ministry of Health, the country recorded a total of 12,600 patients with HFMD in the first six months of 2023. In just one month, from May 19 to June 18, 5,383 cases were reported. – VNA
