Anaheim Ducks Decline Qualifying Offers to Maxime Comtois and Simon Benoît: NHL Free Agency News and Updates

2023-06-30 21:29:57

Forward Maxime Comtois and defender Simon Benoît will not extend their stay under the hot California sun next season. The Anaheim Ducks announced Friday that they will not submit qualifying offers to these two skaters.

This means that they will become restricted free agents on July 1st.

Comtois scored nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points in 64 games last season, while posting a -20 differential. After amassing 33 points in 55 contests in 2020-21, he hasn’t been able to maintain that pace.

The Ducks’ 2017 second-round pick just completed a two-year, $4.075 million contract.

As for Simon Benoit, he spent the entire 2022-2023 season in a Ducks uniform, collecting 10 points, including three goals.

Never drafted, the Laval native signed a contract as a free agent with the California team in March 2019.

Unsurprisingly, Anaheim offered a qualifying offer to forwards Troy Terry and Trevor Zegras as well as defenseman Jamie Drysdale.

Quebecer Benoît-Olivier Groulx and goalkeeper Lukas Dostal also received a qualifying offer from the organization.

Same fate for Sprong and Poehling

Comtois is far from the only one to have suffered this disavowal from his team, while several other NHL teams made the same type of announcement at the start of the evening.

Thus, the Seattle Kraken did not make an offer to forwards Morgan Geekie and Daniel Sprong, even though the latter scored 21 goals last season. Acquired in the trade sending Jeff Petry to Pittsburgh, former Canadiens first choice Ryan Poehling did not receive an offer of the Penguins and will be a free agent tomorrow too. Another former CH, Victor Mete, suffered the same fate from the Maple Leafs.

Having not played since 2022 due to injury, former second overall pick Nolan Patrick did not receive of qualifying offer from the Golden Knights either. The Sabers, for their part, release former first-round pick Tyson Jost and former Canadiens defenseman Kale Clague, among others. The Sharks have not made an offer for goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood, but would nevertheless intend to come to an agreement with him.
