Four top mineral water, three a big flop! Although many households now rely on soda makers, bottled mineral water is still in demand as a thirst quencher. Many people drink bottled water for the taste, which can be slightly salty, bitter, or sour, depending on the source. Stiftung Warentest took a closer look at 29 medium-carbonated mineral waters.
Critical substances in dm water
The testers were unable to find any germs, drug residues or critical soil substances such as arsenic or uranium in the bottles of any of the 29 products. There was only criticism for three mineral waters:
In the Globus– Own brand (Adello source in Ebersburg, Hesse) a pesticide degradation product was found – overall rating: satisfactory (3.0).Im Edeka good & cheap (Léa Quelle in Mérignies, France) the mineral information on the label did not match the amounts tested – overall rating: sufficient (4.3) .Im dm Ivorell-Mineral water (source Belleau in Schwollen, Rhineland-Palatinate) two carcinogenic substances were found with benzene and acetaldehyde, which demonstrably got into the water from the PET plastic material of the bottle. Although the substances found are below the guideline values of the Mineral and Table Water Ordinance, the dm brand was penalized with the worst overall test score: sufficient (4.5).
The fact that dm advertises its product, which is also quite expensive at 0.90 euros per liter, with the statement “suitable for preparing baby food” is another point of criticism from Stiftung Warentest. dm has not yet commented to Stiftung Warentest on whether the mineral water will remain on the market. Globus and Edeka have meanwhile announced that they have changed their source.
“Medium” mineral water: These own brands are the price-performance winners
Four mineral waters shared the overall grade in the test: very good (1.4) the top position among themselves. The Aquintus-Mineral water from our own spring in Dinslaken, North Rhine-Westphalia costs 0.40 euros per liter (reusable PET bottle, 1 liter) and is therefore a good twice as expensive as the three price/performance winners – three discounter own brands for 0 each, 18 euros per liter:
Kaufland K-Classic Medium from the Löningen spring in Lower Saxony (non-returnable PET bottle, 1.5 litres)
Lidl Saskia Jessen Medium from the Jessen spring in Saxony-Anhalt (non-returnable PET bottle, 1.5 litres)
Penny Medium Quintus Quelle from the Quintus source in Bruchsal, Baden-Württemberg (non-returnable PET bottle, 1.5 litres) Advertisement: Recommendations from our partners
Glass or plastic bottle – which is better for health and the environment?
Many consumers ask themselves the question – mineral water from the plastic or from the glass bottle? Overall, the testers did not find any differences in terms of health, but they did when it came to sustainability. According to Stiftung Warentest, returnable PET bottles are best represented from an environmental point of view, followed by glass bottles. Single-use PET bottles are the least sustainable – they scored better when they’re made from 100 percent recycled PET (recyclate). Interesting: All four test winners are sold in plastic bottles.
If you want to protect the environment when buying, you should make sure that the mineral water comes from your region. With this you can at least make a small contribution.
