Croatian prosecutors have once more accused national team captain Luka Modric and former international Dejan Lovren of giving false testimony in a major football-related corruption trial.
In 2017, the two players appeared as witnesses during a multimillion-euro corruption trial involving former Dinamo Zagreb coach Zdravko Mamić, and gave details of their transfer from the current Croatian champions.
At that time, Modric testified regarding the details of his transfer in 2008 from Dynamo to Tottenham, England, before moving to Real Madrid in 2012. As for Lovren, he provided details of his transfer in 2010 from Dynamo to Lyon, to which he returned this year.
Both players were accused of giving false testimony in 2018, but the charges were later dropped due to lack of evidence once morest Modric in the same year, and for Lovren in early 2019.
The day before yesterday, prosecutors in the eastern town of Osijek charged two people, citing only the two years in which they were born and accusing them of “giving false testimony”. Local media said they were Modric and Lovren.

Mamic and three others were found guilty of abuse of power and corruption charges that cost Dinamo more than 15 million euros ($16.3 million) and the state 1.5 million euros. According to the indictment, the funds were embezzled through bogus player transfer deals.
