Citing a study published in the journal Science Advances of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on the 29th, the Washington Post, an American daily newspaper, reported that living near a green area can increase life expectancy by an average of two and a half years.

A study of more than 900 people living in four US cities, Birmingham, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Oakland, compared age-related biological changes for 20 years from 1986 to data from inhabited green spaces. Those with more than 20% of green space were on average 2 years and 6 months younger biologically than those with 20% green space.

The findings show that green spaces, which have been shown to have an impact on lower mortality rates in previous studies, can also help slow down biological age.

“The more greenery around where you live, the younger you can be than your actual age,” said the research team. “A person’s biological age can speed up or slow down depending on their lifestyle, but if the biological age is higher than the actual age, aging such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s can occur. It increases the risk of contracting related diseases,” he said.

The researchers also advised, “In order for people to live healthy lives, they need to think more regarding their surroundings along with diet, sleep and exercise.”
